What to Expect from the Invisalign Process

Last updated 11 months ago

For adults and teens wishing to straighten their teeth but also wanting to avoid traditional orthodontic braces, Invisalign can be a viable option. Invisalign is a gentle procedure that gradually shifts teeth into their proper positions. Here’s what happens when you and your dentist decide that Invisalign is right for you:

  • Impressions

Your dentist will take dental impressions and X-rays of your entire mouth in order to get an accurate picture of the placement of your teeth. This data is sent to a special lab that will create your Invisalign trays for the duration of your treatment.

  • Aligners

When your Invisalign trays, also called aligners, are ready, you will visit your dentist for placement. Your dentist will show you how to slide the trays onto your teeth and provide you with the next few trays for you to change at home after wearing each aligner for the recommended number of weeks. You should ask any questions you have about brushing, flossing, and eating at this appointment.

  • Treatment

Every two weeks, you will change to the next set of alignment trays in the series. Approximately every six weeks, you’ll see your dentist for checkups, questions, monitoring of your progress, and new sets of trays.

  • Completion

Depending on the severity of your misalignment, treatment can take between one and two years. When you and your dentist are satisfied with the new position of your teeth, your treatment is considered complete. Your dentist may recommend wearing the final tray at night as a retainer for a while to ensure that your teeth do not shift out of their new position.
